It’s safe to say that a decent number of Tumblr users are a part of the Millennial generation. So, tell us: Do you own a car or house? If not, why?

IT’S BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO DISPOSABLE INCOME YOU THUNDERING IDIOTS. F-ing preference has nothing to do with it. 50% of college graduates have no job! They all have the most student loan debt ever! What are you asking this question for?!

Also: housing is a good bit more expensive now.

My parents got a 15-year mortgage on a new house in the mid-70s. The house was $32,000. Average home price in that area now? $190,000.

So, home prices went up. Food prices went up. Health care prices went WAY UP. Rent prices went up. Higher education went up so damn high that some of us forgo that all together. Energy prices went up. Car prices went up.

Prices of prices went up.

We also pay cell phone bills, internet bills, data plans, text plans, online subscriptions, cable/satellite tv, netflix, DVR subscriptions — bills that didn’t even exist 30-40 years ago. We also use computers and smartphones and microwaves and other consumer electronics that didn’t exist 20-50 years ago.

We need medications and doctors and contact lenses and tampons and maxi pads and other things that cost money just to be alive and keep us healthy.

Most of us can’t afford to:

Get married and have a “Traditional” big wedding

Buy a house

Buy a new car

PLAN to have children

Take two, consecutive weeks of vacation.

Jobs that paid 50k in the late 1990s now pay between 30-35. Interest rates that favor consumers have gone down.

So I say, no. We are not choosing not to buy homes. We’re not choosing to take the bus in cities where there’s no good public transit. WE ARE NOT CHOOSING TO LIVE WHAT SOCIETY DEEMS AS AN UNDESIRABLE LIFESTYLE.

Don’t even get me started on the fact that these two people in the picture are young white hipsters. Young black and brown folks have been forgoing homeownership and buying new cars for decades, this shit isn’t new, pal. You’re just acting like this shit is new because it’s hitting white folks.

anyway, my point is: We are f-ing broke.

Throwing in the disabled/”spoonie” voice. More young people are disabled than ever (or at least applying/fighting for assistance<—*note meager assistance/supplemental not a “gravyboat” as some ignorant people suggest) & higher rates of chronic illnesses are being seen in younger & younger people = No/limited income, medical bills, medication/treatment costs, messed up credit (thanks to ambulance usage, dr’s/hospital bills, etc), no insurance, and so on..

~~not to even mention wage differences & discrimination (in work or some housing) for different disabilities/genders/races~~

I’m sure we’ve all seen this going around the web. Merida has become a Disney Princess. And it has sparked outrage! How dare they make her into a skinny, sexy, princess! That’s going against everything she stood for in the movie.

She isn’t even that skinny (or rather no skinnier then she is normally, tho she does look a little older because of dem hips). I feel like everyone just nit picks Disney because they’re “the bad guy” and while yes they do offer/market a certain style/persona for girls (aka princess) WHO THE FUCK CARES! If you don’t like what Disney is then dont buy their products. If your kid likes brave and you/they don’t like this interpretation then buy products that portray her in the pixar way (because that stuff still exsits, just search amazon). Personally I see nothing wrong with this translation from Pixar to Disney, they’re just marketing her to a different audience/ inducting her into a well known group (filled with some other fierce ladies), she may not have her bow and arrows but she’s still portraying a strong independent young woman with out them from her stance I don’t read a piece of sexy eye candy, I still see someone who stands up for what she believe in.

Silly arguments like this is what turns me off to “main stream” feminism…. :/

I think this argument ignores some of the deeper points made in most feminist arguments regarding the Disney Princess brand.

The glitter and girliness is not what bugs us. It’s that that’s all the brand (NOT the movies) have to offer. If there was some diversity in how the princesses were marketed (Mulan could be portrayed as a badass with some femininity instead of totally feminine, Merida could be the same, Rapunzel could still be spunky, etc.), it would be fine. But *all* of them are marketed as glittery and girly and stereotypically feminine. It’s been a while since I went on the Disney Princess website but all of the games there involve playing dress-up with the princesses for parties. Let’s ignore that Mulan was dressed up as a boy for a good two thirds of her movie and Merida hates feminine dresses in general.

Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with a girl wanting to play dress-up and be stereotypically feminine but that shouldn’t be the only option for them. Ok, fine, parents don’t have to buy the Disney Princess toys for their daughters but where else are they going to find girls’ toys (not talking about girls who like to play with boys’ toys which is fine too) that contradict the stereotypically feminine image or let them do things that don’t tie into the stereotypes of what a girl should do and who she should be? The problem isn’t that these toys or games exist, it’s that they’re so pervasive that there is no room for other options, or even just a middle ground, for girls.

The reaction against the Merida redesign is just a small part of a larger argument. And yes, she can be redesigned in a way that fits with the Disney 2D Princess style and still makes her look more like she did in the movie.

As long as both men are women are expected to work, but taking care of children and the household are still largely considered a woman’s job, I am a feminist.
As long as boys and girls are treated differently, expected to act differently, and surrounded by different toys and colours from the day they are born, I am a feminist.
As long as topless women aren’t allowed in public unless they’re on the cover of a men’s magazine, I am a feminist.
As long as women who have sex frequently are generally told they are “sluts”, “lacking self-respect” and “lacking morals” by both men and women, while men who frequently have sex are “just being men” and it’s “natural for them”, I am a feminist.

I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.

A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?

It is a big deal because i’m a transman.

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that it’s hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you don’t pass, it’s hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.

Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.

At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didn’t care. Not in the sense that they don’t emotionally care, but that it didn’t matter. I was male and that’s all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.

At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who weren’t sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when you’ve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didn’t ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.

TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.
